I absolutely love being outside. I feel most at home and most happy when I'm in the mountains, in fresh lake water, or out on the trail. Being in the outdoors opens my soul and allows space for new meditations and new depths. It's an incredibly big part of who I am, and it teaches me more about life and more about myself every single time I spend time in it. So here are some little thoughts about what the environment means to me, which I wanted to post because I think sometimes the environment is overlooked and taken for granted, or not taken care of, which is so sad to me. The outdoors are vital for our souls and hearts, and I think that fact needs to be looked into more often. So here's my two cents about why the outdoors are absolutely incredible, and why I found that my home is in the wild.
1. Nature provides insanely deep connection.
For me, there is nothing more connecting than being in the outdoors. Nature provides connection to my earth, to my soul, to my roots. It links me to where I come from and where I am, and everything in between. The connection I feel in the wild is one of the strongest, most gorgeous experiences I ever have, and every time I'm out in nature, there's a different feeling of connection. Whether it's walking barefoot through tall grass or breathing in crisp mountain air, the outdoors bring me back to what really matters.
2. The wild provides a beautiful disconnect too.
I think being outside is a great time to disconnect from distraction and stress. For me, sometimes it's hard to get a solid break from everything- I do give myself breaks and chill time by doing yoga or taking baths or doing other chill stuff, but getting an actual full on break is kind of difficult. When I backpack, camp out, or just take a good bit of time to be outside, I feel disconnected from the everyday distractions ranging from school stress to my phone, and the feeling lasts. It's not just temporary.
3. The environment is pure beauty.
Nature is so rich and full of beauty- it's too incredible to capture on camera and it's always gorgeous enough to take my breath away. The outdoors provide the most vivid colors and views, and every day in nature is like seeing a brand new painting on a fresh canvas. The yellows and pinks and reds of a sunrise are awe inspiring, and don't even get me started on fall colors or snowy days. All of it manages to leave me in wonder- it's incredible.
4. The outdoors bring adventure.
Being in the outdoors brings out my spirit of adventure. It makes me brave and excited to keep trying new things and reaching new heights. It makes me feel alive and full and overjoyed. My best adventures have all been in nature- cliff diving, caving, white water rafting, skiing, and backpacking (just to name a few). It leaves me ready for new adventures every time, and teaches me to step outside my comfort zone and keep living fully and in the moment.
5. The wild is home for me.
Overall, I feel my happiest and most at home when I'm outdoors. They reconnect me to my life and to my roots, and they shape me into who I am. Nature brings me comfort and makes me feel love deeply and wildly. Exploring the outdoors leaves me constantly finding new meanings for "home" and brings me closer and closer to the stuff that matters. I'm incredibly thankful for this insanely beautiful environment I get to call home, and will work to keep it healthy and beautiful and full of adventure for as long as I can.
